New GPU, Computer won't boot?
I've brought a refurbished ATi 5870 graphics card. I've put it in my system to replace my NVIDIA 8800 GTX but the system won't boot. The fans in the computer seem to speed up and slow down, when they speed up the network adapter lights up, but goes out when the fans slow down so it sounds like a power issue.
My PSU i beleive is at least 700W, it has 2x 6-Pin cables(its a modular PSU) i'm using an 8-pin to 6-pin PCIe 2.0 to PCIe 1.0 adapter for the card. The card beeps if the cable is unplugged but doesn't when it is, but either way the computer won't show any picture/boot
I've tried unplugging one of my 2 hard drives, case fans and DVD drive but still no luck
Could it be a faulty card or a power problem on my system?
Power draw of HD 5870 is higher than that of 8800GTX by about 40W but your PSU is still fully capable of handling the HD 5870. Most high wattage cards will only draw full power when there is 3D game load. During boot up (2D display), card's power draw is small thus it should be easy to display opening screen, POST and OS loading. There should be no power issue during boot up.
The card could be defective. Only way to confirm is by putting it in another PC.
